This Week with Obama

I have been watching Obama on This Week with George Stephanopoulos and I can not believe what I am hearing. First he discusses tax cuts, tax cuts are welfare if they go to people who do not pay taxes. It is tax relief if it actually allows working Americans to keep their money. Does this guy have any clue about how the economy works, he wants to build the economy from the bottom up. That is ridiculous, every dollar that someone has and spends, grows our economy tenfold. Charity is at its highest when taxes are at its lowest. This is the clear difference between candidates, McCain wants the American people to spend their money however they want, and Obama wants to take our money and spend it however he wants. Next he moves on to National Security experience, somehow Obama thinks voting present on legislation and picking Joe Biden as Vice President is National Security experience but being a Governor of a state that borders another country and being in charge of the National Guard is not. But this comes from a man who thinks running for office grants him more executive experience than being Mayor of a city, I guess he decided to skip over that while he has been running for President she has been a Governor for two years. Last week when discussing Palin he said he said his campaign budget was more than the city of Wasilla for which Palin was Mayor which again reiterates his equating of running for president as experience. In regards to Palin he also says McCain would really show he was for change if he had picked Lieberman as VP. I am so tired of hearing about Lieberman, I am glad he is right on the war but Lieberman is wrong on almost everything else, he is still a Democrat. How is it cow toeing to the right wing by picking a Republican for the Republican ticket and not a Democrat. Why didn't Obama pick Chuck Hagel? Is he giving in to the Democrats by picking a Democrat? This notion is so ridiculous I feel stupid even writing about it. Moving on, when asked if he ever thought about joining the armed forces and if not why, Obama proceeded to compare signing up for the Selective Service in 1979 (which was the law) and knowing people who were part of military families as the same as joining the armed forces. I do not know if he does not understand the questions or he just has set things he says to anything with certain key words. Throughout the interview he does not seem to actually answer the questions asked. He was also asked how what he would do as President that would break from the Democrat party. He said he would support charter schools which the teachers unions have proposed. Since when do unions and especially teachers unions separate themselves from the Democrat party? He also discusses his non-view on abortion which I will discuss further next time because that in itself deserves its own discussion. Obama says he needs to make the choice clear to the American people between himself and McCain, that can only help the Republicans.

Pro Life?

I have always been pro-life. I clearly remember barely knowing what makes a baby and thinking that the unborn child deserved protection. I remember arguing with various family members and friends about the government's "Control" over our bodies. I did not need anybody telling me what was clear, once an egg is fertilized there is a life and it is wrong to destroy said life for selfish reasons. The job of the government is to protect the innocent. When I heard the other day that Barack Obama said he could not answer the question of when life begins, that it is above his pay grade, I wanted to scream. How can you not step up and say what you really believe. You either think it is a life or you do not. Whatever your values are, at least have honesty as one of them, let the voters decide if their values are aligned with yours. But to not even have the guts to say what he thinks, shows he is not ready to lead, he is so afraid of not pleasing everyone he can not really say anything without having it written for him. This great speaker is only that when he is prepared way ahead of time and even then his words never have any meaning. Show us you can lead because clearly if you can not answer a basic question, not what you know but what you think/feel, you are not. You are a commander not a celebrity, it is not your job to be adored, it is to be respected. Do you think an unborn child has human rights? I do and I did not have to wait to find out who I could please the most by thinking this way. Once an egg is fertilized a zygote has DNA, which decides if it is a boy or girl if its eyes are blue or brown, in less than a few weeks it has a heart beat that you can see. I did not graduate from Harvard but I can at least say a DNA and a beating heart signifies life.

POLITICS

I have always thought politics encompassed everything because sadly the government is so much a part of our lives. To say you are not interested in politics to me says you are not interested in being in control of your own life. I once had a professor say there is hardly anything in your life that some aspect of government is not part of. Think of your day...if you sleep on a mattress there are regulations on what type of material it is made of, if you have an alarm clock with a radio it is regulated by the FCC, the food you have for breakfast is regulated by the FDA, the street you drive/walk/ride on is regulated by your city, and who can count how many regulations go into the car you drove. Your place of employment is covered by numerous agencies, the building you work in, the company you work for, and if you have go to public school others decide what you should learn, what you should eat, how you should play and the list goes on and on. I myself am tired of this nanny state and it is getting worse. The city of Los Angeles has barred new construction of fast food restaurants, are they going to pay the difference for the people who are looking for affordable food? Fast food restaurants do have healthier choices, you do not have order a triple cheeseburger with fries and a shake. It is not the the job of the government to tell people what restaurants they can eat at, you should be responsible for your choices, good or bad. When the anti-smoking fascists started there were warnings food was next and they said "do not be ridiculous," but here it is. The government already controls so much of our lives, what is next? When you are deciding who to vote for or even deciding whether not to vote please make sure you think about what impact your choice will make. Not voting is yet again allowing other people to make choices for you, and when you are deciding on a candidate think about what I believe Thomas Jefferson said; a government powerful enough to give you everything is strong enough to take everything away.

Class Warfare

I can not believe the Democrats actually think it is a good idea to bring up anything about houses. Yeah Cindy McCain has seven houses, so what, her family actually owned a business and contributed to the economy. As for the Obamas, they are not exactly on food stamps. Barrack got his money from writing a memoir in his 20's (sounds awfully arrogant to me)and from handing out political favors to Tony Rezko which is the epitome of old politics. Michelle keeps talking about how hard her father worked to put his kids through school, but now that her husband is running for President it is all of a sudden wrong to work hard and prosper. This is so typical for the Democratic elites, they say how they come from working class families and were able to push through and succeed, but they assume nobody else can do it without government assistance. I want a President who recognizes the great opportunities this country offers, and tell us anybody can succeed if they work hard. I do not want someone that only wants all those things for their families, meanwhile doing everything in their power to keep everyone else from having the same.

The Benefits of Preschool

I just read an Opinion in the Wall Street Journal titled "Protect Our Kids from Preschool,"by Shikha Dalmia and Lisa Snell. I have two boys, one six and one three and neither are going or went to preschool. I have been lucky enough to be a stay at home Mom for which I am very grateful. I understand not everyone is able to do that. Since I have been able to do that I wanted to spend and enjoy the most time possible with my kids. With my first one I was not sure I made the right decision to not put him in preschool. I made the decision for many reasons, first I was not ready to have him away from me, which I know is purely selfish. Second I thought I would be able to give him the academic portion he would need before starting kindergarten. Third for socialization I took him to Sunday School, and placed him in some playgroups to be around kids his age. The last reason was financial, I just could not see spending hundreds of dollars a month to have my child away from me at such a small age. I myself never went to preschool and I graduated college and am a functioning member of society. I was lucky as well to have had my Mom be at home with me. I am mentioning the stay at home aspect because of course this does not apply to those who have to place their kids in day care, that is completely different. However I do not think if you are a stay at home parent you should feel obligated to place your child in preschool. What makes you think separating your child from you at an earlier age is beneficial. I hear mothers talking about all that is expected from your child in kindergarten now, well that is true but how hard is it to go over those things with your child? Preschool is hardly any instruction, maybe one-third. I am just tired of the government telling us they need more control over our children's' upbringing and want to force us to pay for it. There have been various studies showing separating children from their parents has a negative impact. I would guess there are no studies showing more time away from your kids is beneficial. I know I may be offering mostly anecdotal evidence but there are kids that did not do well academically or socially and were in preschool, I have seen no affect, except maybe preschool having a negative impact on behavior. My oldest started kindergarten last year and did very well despite not going to preschool. His teachers said at both parent teacher conferences how they wish they had more students like him in their class. He did very well socially and academically so all he would have got from preschool is less money for his family. If you make the decision to place your child in preschool do it for the right reasons. The more I see I am very glad I made the decision to protect my child from preschool. If interested you can view the above mentioned opinion at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121936615766562189.html

Palin, What a Great Pick

I am so excited over the GOP vice presidential candidate. Even though it has been four days since the announcement, I am still ecstatic. Although I am a John McCain supporter I did not vote for him in the primaries, mostly out of ignorance. The more I learn about him, the more I like him. I have to say his stand on immigration in the past still upsets me but I know that most politicians are out of touch when it comes to the cost of illegal immigration on our communities, schools, etc.. Honestly besides that he seems to be a lot more conservative than I had thought. Just because you do not stand with the Republican Party in all cases does not mean you are not a conservative, I would rather have a true conservative than a true Republican. To get back to the Palin pick, she is practically everything I hoped for. Also I was so worried it was going to be Romney, that basically anybody but him was a definite plus. I am fervently pro-life and to hear that sad about Palin thrills me. Between Obama saying he does not know when life begins, and Pelosi acting as though you can be a staunch Catholic and also pro-choice, it is so refreshing to have a leader who is not afraid to say when life begins, and also walked the walk when it comes to life. Abortion is one of those issues that I believe is about more than just a procedure it is the way you perceive the importance of all life. It is frightening f
for me to hear about all the down syndrome babies now being aborted. You hear all the time "keep your hands off my body" well that is all fine and good, but I think having government subsidized killing is much worse than government sanctioning the protecting and upholding of life. In Oregon now if you are under state medical insurance they will not pay for your cancer treatment if you only have a few years left to live, however they will pay for you to kill yourself. How is abortion any different? They will pay for you to abort your child but they will not help you to raise said child, is that so far off? Once you start toying with the idea some lives are worth protecting and saving others are not, you may turn around and have someone thinking that about you or someone you love. Obama voted not to require doctors to save a child that lives despite a botched abortion. So that baby although alive but not wanted by its mother is not worth saving. Sadly there are many children not "wanted" by their parents, however luckily there are many people that want nothing more than a child. To have both the presidential nominee and the vice presidential nominee to be so clear on this issue is definitely going to bring the party together and get people excited again. There is more to both of them than their pro-life stance which I will discuss further later but right now I am so glad McCain did not give in to those who do not believe all life is sacred.
